This Week in Podcasting March 18-24

DIS Unplugged March 21: I am a little afraid to say this but I think this show may be changing for the better. I am so timid to say this because I don’t want the hosts to realize it and change the show back to its former, more undesirable format. Now don’t get me wrong, the show is getting better, but there still is a lot of things about the Dis Unplugged that I do not like. This weeks news and roundtable segment was one of the brighter spots for me. Usually this segment is filled with story after story that is geared to get you to buy trips through the hosts travel agency. It is such a huge turn off for me, but this week they kept the advertising to a minimum. I do not know if that was intentional or not, but I like it. Hosts Teresa and Kathy gave a very funny and somewhat informative review of Disneys Hollywood Studios. I have to say that the rest of the crew picking on Teresa is getting very, very old. Teresa is the every man’s man, and when the crew picks on her for being “normal”, and having the same deep emotional feelings about Disney as the majority of Dis listeners only makes the rest of the crew seem more out of touch and snooty than usual. It seems like some of the hosts don’t even enjoy being at Disney. Hell, the only reason they have a show or set foot into the parks is so they can shove their  travel agency down your throat; and if your not willing to give them your business, they want nothing to do with you as a simple fan of their show.

Mousetalgia Episode 177: This is the first time that I have ever listened to or heard of this podcast. Its not new to the scene at all, but for some reason it has managed to fly under my radar. This show is a little bit different than the rest of the Disney podcasts. The crew opens the show with a little bit of a news recap. They do a lot more news than just the typical, “this and that ride are down for rehab” type of thing. They do a good job at looking back into the company’s history, and they do a good job at looking at Disney as a whole. The wine talk was a little bit boring for me, but im sure a lot of people enjoyed it. The hosts go into a bit of a discussion about John Carter. Their views are interesting and not too far out of line with everyone else. In the main feature of the show the hosts invite Disney author and historian Jeff Kurtti on the show to talk about the life and passing of Robert Sherman. The segment taught me a lot about Sherman and the crew did a very good job at getting across the depth of emotion that the rest of the Disney community is feeling with Robert Sherman’s passing. Guest Jeff does a fantastic job at sharing stories about Sherman. He brings a very close and personal look at the life of Sherman. This show from the Mousestalgia group is very good. Its solid all the way through and easy to listen. It’s a new show for me, but it will definitely be on my must listen list every week!

The Rotoscopers Episode 5: This show may very well be Rookie of the Year. Great production quality, great content, and personable hosts. That being said, there still are a few things I take issue with for this weeks show. This week the three hosts bring up the topic of the story, and history of Disney/Pixars Toy Story. Their analysis of the film is spot on, but their discussion, and back and forth was a little bit weird. The hosts are very enthusiastic about Toy Story and that shows in this podcast. I do think that they quoted the movie a bit too much. It would have been fine if they had put in a drop or two here or there, but when they continuously quote the movie, and then giggle afterwards, it kind of got a little bit of annoying. Its ok to drop a funny line here or there, but it just seems like the crew over did it. I know they are young, and enthusiastic, but the constant schoolgirl like giggling throughout the show was a bit of a turn off for me. Don’t let that be too much of a deterrent for you when it comes to listening to this show. This podcast is still a one of a kind show that brings fresh, new and unique ideas and stories to the podcasting table; and that is a rare thing in a community of 2 million Disney podcasts.

SHOW OF THE WEEK: WDW Kingdomcast Episode 14: In this weeks episode of Kingdomcast hosts Gary Hall and Hunter Nixon are joined by guest host Ron Bidnez to discuss Walt Disney World’s One More Disney Day event. There were a lot of podcasts in the past couple of weeks that focused on this topic, but these three guys did the best job at summing up the events. From start to finish this show a was an enjoyable listen, and I cant help but feel like I was listening to  three guys casually talking together at a bar. Why three grown men would be in a bar talking about WDW I have no idea, but that’s what this show sounded like to me. The analysis is spot on, and the crew brings their unafraid, un ashamed sense of humor to the table. I think I like this show, because like WDW Fanboys, I can relate to the hosts. We are all about the same age. We talk, walk, and have the same sense, or lack there of, of humor. These guys are more relatable to me than your average Disney podcast, which is usually hosted by Disney moms who are too afraid to go on Big Thunder Mountain, and think Universal Studios is a dangerous place to be after 4pm; and that’s why Kingdomcast is the Show of the Week.

This Week in Podcasting March 11-17

These Amazing Places show203: This was the first unofficial Disney podcast that I ever listened to. I did a random iTunes search for “theme park podcast”, and this show was the first that came up. I was amazed at the production quality. The format for this show is not my favorite. The bulk of these shows is mainly on ride audio based. This format is great for a listener who does not go to WDW that often, but for someone who is in the parks every month, I do not have a huge need for a format like this. Even still, I really do like this show. They have a small news segment and a little bit of a discussion segment on each end of their shows. I rediscovered this sow in the middle of the week and I am so in love with it, I am going to go back into their archives and start catching up on past shows. The audio quality of the show is stellar as well. I am sure that when I redo my Top Ten Theme Park Podcast list at the end of the year, this show may make its way onto the list. It is a little bit out of the mainstream of regular Disney podcasts, but you will be glad you took the time to listen to These Amazing Places.

Disney, Indiana Episode96: Again, I should say that I am a little bit biased with this podcast because I am from Indiana, so just hearing the name of this show gives me a nice warm feeling inside. That being said, this weeks show from hosts Tracey and Scott was stellar, as usual. The show starts off with a little bit of a dud. There is a bit too much scripted material, and Im not a big fan of all of the ads. Although I cant blame them too much for putting ads in their show. The scripted material is a bit of a turn off though. Next the duo goes on an in depth exploration of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. They do an amazing job at giving some great information. Their presentation is very well done and I love how they plan a saluting a different short from time to time. Co host Tracey gives a great review of the book Walt before Mickey. I had no idea this book was even around. Tracey gave such a good review I went ahead and purchased it online. That makes for a total of about 20 theme park books I have sitting on my shelf that I have yet to read. They wrap up the show with a look at the troubled look at the new Disney dud John Carter. When its all said and done, these two really know what they are doing. The production quality is amazing, and they seem  to really know what their listeners want to hear.

Communicore OnlineEpisode 77: I know I say this about other shows, but I really mean it about Communicore Online; this show may be the best produced shows out there in all of podcast. Not just theme park podcasting. This weeks show starts off with the regular news segment, but this news segment is not your average one. Lester Day gives a very quick but important new update. The news is quick, hard hitting, and gets to only the important happenings in the recent week of Disney news. Next host Shane shares on board ride audio of everyones favorite underdog attraction at WDW; the TTA. Shane hits it out of the park when it comes to audio quality on this one. Im not quite sure how he does but he manages to capture the every flowing and continuously moving audio flawlessly. Shane always wraps up his show with a sage piece of advice for his listeners. This again, is one of the most underappreciated podcast out there. I really don’t hear its name come up a lot when fans are talking about some of their favorite shows, but Shane continues to push out quality show after quality show.

SHOW OF THE WEEK: Mouse Lounge Season 6 Episode 12: This week host Gary Chambers is joined by his friend Liana for another special Behind the Mickey bar segment. Liana talks about her recent experience inside Disneyland with the a very special backstage look at the southern California park. Liana gives an excellent account of her full day of events. She took a trip around backstage and she had a very special experience inside the elusive Walts apartment inside Disneyland. Liana is so fun to listen to. Gary does a great job at asking important questions. Between the two of them there wasn’t a stone left uncovered when it came to the full day of events for Liana inside the park. I am used to a Mouse lounge show that is full of special history segments and some really exclusive audio that you cant hear on any other Disney podcast. That being said, even though Gary broke from the usual format, this weeks show is still top notch. There is little to no chance that I will be able to have the experience that Liana had, so she did a really great job at giving a step by step, and emotion by emotion account of her day. I am so thankful that she shared her experience with the Mouse Lounge audience. This show is 100% a must listen!

This Week in Podcasting: March 4-10

Generation Mouse Episode56: This show is quickly growing on me. The hosts are so relate able and fun to listen to. I can not believe that they continue to put such amazing and interesting shows. i find myself liking these shows more and more because the shows are coming from a crew that is so passionate about WDW, and their opinions are innocent, and genuine. This week the crew talks about the different Disney princesses. They discuss the attitude, personality, and stories of the Disney princesses. Some of the princesses even get their royalty questioned. The quality of the conversation is top notch also. The crew talks about the evolution of the attitudes of the princesses. This was an entirely new field of thought for me. I wont get into details about how the conversation goes, but just know that if you listen then you will never look at the princesses in the same way again.

Season Pass PodcastEpisode 194: This week host Doug Barnes is joined by a slew of guest for the 2012 West Coast bash. The show is broadcast live from famous Knotts Berry Farms in southern California with guests Robert Coker, Jeff Tucker, Daniel Miller, and Robb Alvey. Whew, that’s one hell of a line up! Doug and his large crew cover a variety of Knotts topics. I am someone who has never been to, or cared about going to KBF, and what makes this week TSPP special is that it kept my attention and kept me interested.  The gang talks about upcoming attractions for Knotts. Doug and the crew have an A+, great conversation with KFB general manager Raffi Kaprelyan. Raffi shares his amazing story of how he went from a simple newbie to Knotts, to the general manager of the world renowned park. This weeks show from TSPP is just like all of the others; great content, great quality, and a great listen!

Be Our Guest PodcastEpisode 417: This week host Mike is joined by guest Laura. Laura comes on the show this week to talk about her recent trip to WDW. Mike does a great job at discussing recent events with Laura. Laura stayed at the Caribbean Beach resort and toured WDW by herself. She does a great job on the show getting out some really important information and tips to solo travelers. It seems a little bit like hosts Mikes views about WDW are a little bit muted and a bit overly positive, but that’s ok I guess. I shouldn’t complain about a host being too positive and at the same time complain about other hosts being too negative. Right? Laura and Mike make listening very east and pleasant. This show is an all around good show. Great production quality, and some pretty decent content. Am I too reluctant to say nice things?

SHOW OF THE WEEK: Coaster Radio.com Episode 622: The reason this weeks offering from hosts Mike and EB Show of the Week is a little bit different. When I heard the first ten minutes of this weeks show was aggravated, annoyed, and disappointed. The hosts open the show by telling us that they are going to be running down the semi finalist for their annual reel design contest. The contest is a user submitted contest where fans pitch attraction ideas based off of real films. I heard the opening and I gave a big “sigh”. I thought, “well this is going to be incredibly boring”, but silly me for underestimating the talent of hosts Mike and EB. They did a great job at painting a mental picture of the attractions. They did a great job at getting their point across, and sharing their unfiltered opinions. I would have never thought that a couple of guys talking about user submitted roller coaster ideas would be appealing, but the attraction ideas are so amazing, that, combined with Mike and EB’s excellent commentary made this weeks show a great addition to what was a pretty mediocre week in theme park podcasting.
